Medicare Supplement Insurance
Medicare Supplement Insurance (or Medigap) helps fill "gaps" in Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, including coinsurance, co-payments, and deductibles.
Things to Know about Medi-gap Policies
You must have Medicare Part A and Part B
Medicare Supplement Plans are purchased from a private insurance company. You will pay a monthly premium for your Medicare Supplement Policy to the company you have purchased your plan from, in addition to your Medicare Part B Premium
Medicare Supplement Plans have different enrollment periods depending on your situation: your one time 6 month open enrollment period, a potential guaranteed issue situation, as well as circumstances that would require underwriting
You can buy a Medi-gap policy from any insurance company that's licensed in your state to sell one
Any standardized Medi-gap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can't cancel your Medi-gap policy as long as you continue to pay the premium
A Medi-gap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan
